Print options

Print options
Speed or choices

Do you use the printer button on your toolbar to print what's on your screen? It looks like a miniature printer. Maybe you've never noticed it. All programs have a print button somewhere on the toolbar. When you click the button your document goes immediately to the printer. Fast and easy.

However, if you want to be able to choose options for your document (number of copies, which pages to print, etc.) you will want to click File on your menu bar and then click Print. This opens the Print dialog box which gives you many choices.

Instructions (with diagrams) on using the Print dialog box are found on page 72 of my book, Taming Your Computer--The Simple Basics. Click here if you don't have a copy.

Plain screen background

Plain screen background (wallpaper)
Can't see the forest for the trees

Several of my clients have asked me to remove the picture background on their opening screen and replace it with a solid color. They have difficulty seeing the icons against a picture background. You might want to try it too.

To change your background to a solid color, follow these steps. RIGHT click on a blank area of your opening screen (the one you see when you turn on your computer). A shortcut menu will appear. LEFT click Properties. This will open the Display Properties dialog box. LEFT click the Desktop tab. In the lower left corner of the screen you will see a list of choices. Scroll all the way to the top of the list and LEFT click None. To the lower right of that box you will see Color:. Click the dropdown arrow beside the blank box and you will see a selection of colors. LEFT click the color you like and then click OK. Your screen may look weird for a moment, but it's in the process of making the change.

Have you missed any of my previous tips? You can see them on my blog. Clic k here to see the list. If you see one you want to read, just click the name of the tip and it will open on your screen. You can even print it if you like.

Tips like this, complete with diagrams, are found in both of my books, Taming Your Computer--The Simple Basics (for beginners) and Taming Your Computer--Beyond the Basics (intermediate level). Click here to go to my website to order your copy. I'm still offering FREE SHIPPING if you order from the website by credit card or by printing the order form and mailing it to me with your check.

Shortcut key for fonts

Shortcut key for fonts in Word
Another time saver

I keep remembering various keyboard shortcuts that I use all the time and want to share with you. Problem is, if I don't write them down while I'm thinking of it, they're gone. Senior moments again.

This week's keyboard shortcut works in Microsoft Word. If you want to change the font in a document, first highlight the text you want to change and then hold down the CTRL key. Press and release the letter D and the font dialog box will instantly appear before your very eyes.

I tried this with other programs, including programs in Microsoft Office (Access, Excel and Outlook). It did not work in any of them. Go figure. Wouldn't you think Microsoft would create a shortcut that worked in ALL of their programs?

Here's a completely unrelated tip. Yesterday I woke up with a very sore throat and was so tired I felt like I had been hit by a train. Familiar feeling. I had strep throat last month and that's exactly how I felt then. Since it was Sunday, I went to the walk-in Urgent Care facility I had been to before. When the doctor confirmed that it was strep (again) I asked him why/how I had caught it again so soon. He asked, "Did you replace your toothbrush?" Duh -- of course not! No one told me the time before that I should do that. Everyone I've talked to since then has also been shocked at that simple tip. So, I'm sharing it with you. If you ever get strep throat, replace your toothbrush. Tell your friends you heard it here. (Has nothing to do with computers, but I love to share all kinds of information.)

How long has it been since you've checked out the FREE sample lessons on my website? Click here to see them. Each lesson is underlined, which means you can click on it and it will take you to the lesson. Once you get to the lesson you want to see, click on Open the Lesson. The lesson will open and you can print it out.

The purpose of these lessons is to give you a sample of the contents of my books. I have continued the FREE SHIPPING offer for people who order from the website or print out the order form and mail it to me. Click here for more information on ordering the books.

Shortcut Key for "Go To"

Shortcut Key for "Go To"
Get there FAST!

Have you ever been working on a long document in Microsoft Word and wanted to jump from page 3 to page 33? There's a shortcut key to do just that.

From your current position in the document, hold down the CTRL key and press and release the letter g. The Find and Replace dialog box will appear and the "Page" tab will be chosen. Enter the page number you want to Go To in the box on the right and click Go To at the bottom of the box. You'll be there faster than you can say, "Ain't that easy?"

About Me

My photo
I love teaching senior citizens to use computers. I'm a senior myself, so I'm working with my peers. When I work with you in your home on your computer, I don't sit in front of your computer and TELL you want to do. You sit in front of your computer while I TEACH you what to do. I also write step-by-step instructions for you to follow when I'm not there.
