E-mail etiquette

$Account.OrganizationName
Dear Barb,
E-mail etiquette
Mind your manners!

For many of us who are "time challenged," e-mail has taken the place of phone calls and writing letters. It's fast, it's easy, and we can communicate with many people at the same time. As in other forms of communication, there are rules of etiquette for e- mail. Here are a few from my book, Taming Your Computer -- The Simple Basics (page 87).

  • DON’T USE ALL CAPS FOR YOUR MESSAGE. This implies that you’re SHOUTING and someone may misinterpret your message as being angry. Besides, it’s difficult to read large amounts of text in all caps.
  • Watch what you say. If you wouldn’t shout it from a mountain top, think twice about putting it into an e-mail message. E-mail’s not as “private” as you’d like to think. Once it's left your hands, you have no control over how many times it's forwarded and to whom.
  • Interpretation is in the eye (mind) of the reader. In contrast to a telephone conversation where the other party can hear the tone of your voice, e-mail can easily be misinterpreted by the reader. Sometimes a perfectly harmless message is misunderstood by the reader and feelings can be hurt.
  • There are several other e-mail tips for you to consider on page 87 of the book. Page 86 teaches you how to clean up e-mail forwards so you're not forwarding that long list of e-mail addresses when you forward items to your friends.

Supplies of the current books are dwindling. Sometime in the next couple of months they will be replaced by one new book. If you have one of the current books but not the other, I would suggest you order now before they're gone. Click here to go to my website to order. Or you may call me at 303 752-2152 to order by phone.

    About Me

    My photo
I love teaching senior citizens to use computers. I'm a senior myself, so I'm working with my peers. When I work with you in your home on your computer, I don't sit in front of your computer and TELL you want to do. You sit in front of your computer while I TEACH you what to do. I also write step-by-step instructions for you to follow when I'm not there.
