No, we're not talking D-Con here. Every now and then a mouse will just decide it's worked hard enough and refuses to obey your commands. It is possible to shut your computer down without your mouse so you can go out and buy a new one. Simply hold down the CTRL key and press the ESC key (Escape -- upper left corner of your keyboard). This will bring up your Start Menu. Press your UP arrow key (bottom right corner of your keyboard) to select "Turn Off Computer." Hit the Enter key, then press the RIGHT arrow key (bottom right corner of your computer) and press Enter again. Your computer will go through the shutdown process safely. Change the font in Word -- permanently!

Change the font in Word -- permanently! Have it YOUR way

The default (standard) font in Microsoft Word documents in Times New Roman 12 pt. If that's not your favorite font or you find it too small to read comfortably, you can change it -- permanently. To do so, first start Microsoft Word. Before typing anything, LEFT click Format, LEFT click Font. In the Font dialog box, choose a new font and/or font size by LEFT clicking the dropdown arrow beside the font name and/or font size box. LEFT click your new choices. Look in the bottom left corner of the Font dialog box and LEFT click Default. A "warning" box will open asking if you want to change the default font. Be fearless! LEFT click Yes. From this point forward, the font in all of your Microsoft Word documents will be changed to your new selection. Sorry, this option isn't available in Microsoft Works. Check airline arrivals on Google

Check airline arrivals on Google Don't waste time calling the airlines

With the holidays coming up, do you dread calling the airlines to check on flight arrival times? It's really not necessary. You can do it on Google. Click here to go to Google's website: www.Google.com. In the long white Search box type the airline and flight number, for example United 222. (Be sure to use a space between them.) Then LEFT click Google Search. The first line of search results will say: Track status of United Airlines flight 222 on Travelocity - Expedia - fboweb.com LEFT click fboweb.com. A map will appear on your screen showing the current location of the flight. To the right of the map you will see a status chart, indicating the flight's origination and destination cities, it's current status and other flight information. Cleaning your Flat Screen Monitor

Cleaning your flat screen monitor

Do you have one of those fancy new flat screen monitors -- the ones that take up very little space on your desk? Aren't they wonderful? They do take special care, however. Do not use glass cleaner on these screens. They are softer than glass, so they require special handling. Keep your fingers and sharp objects away from this type of screen because they are very easily damaged or scratched. Remove surface dust or fingerprints with a soft, dry cloth. If this doesn't do the trick, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol may be sprayed onto a damp cleaning cloth. Vinegar may be used instead of alcohol. Paper towels are too abrasive and may scratch the screen. Strong cleaners such as ammonia should never be used because they can damage the screen. Print from the last page to the first page

Print from the last page to the first No more collating long documents

One problem with printing long documents is the way printers eject the pages. Page 1 lands in the paper tray face up, page 2 goes on top of it, etc. When the job is done you must go through the entire stack and resort them so they are in the proper order. You do have the option to print your document from the last page forward, making resorting unnecessary. This might not seem like such a big deal, but what if you're printing 10 copies of a 10- page document? Let me show you how to save some time. When you are ready to print, LEFT click File, then LEFT click Print. The Print dialog box will appear. Look for a button, usually in the bottom left corner, labeled Options. LEFT click the Options button. You will see a long list of options. Look for a checkbox beside Reverse Print Order. LEFT click this checkbox. Click OK and click OK again. You've done it. Your document will print from the last page to the first. Celebrate all the time you've saved! Do you wonder how much of your hard drive is full? You can find out very easily. LEFT click the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen. LEFT click My Computer on the right side of the new screen that opens. RIGHT click Local Disk (C:) . LEFT click Properties. You will see a diagram of a circle indicating the used and unused areas of your hard drive. Most computers purchased in the last two years have HUGE hard drives and you will probably never fill them up. When you are finished, LEFT click OK and then close the My Computer window. Easy? Right click to spellcheck Another use for the right mouse button

Did you know that if you misspell a word in a document you can quickly correct it by right clicking the word? It's true! When you right click the word, a shortcut menu will appear, giving you alternate spellings. Simply LEFT click the word you want to use and it's fixed! Here's another tip. If this is an uncommon word (such as the spelling of an unusual last name) you can ADD the word to the dictionary so it won't be underlined in red ever again!
