My Mouse Died!

$Account.OrganizationName
Greetings!
My Mouse Died!
Surviving without a mouse

No, we're not talking D-Con here. Every now and then a mouse will just decide it's worked hard enough and refuses to obey your commands. It is possible to shut your computer down without your mouse so you can go out and buy a new one. Simply hold down the CTRL key and press the ESC key (Escape -- upper left corner of your keyboard). This will bring up your Start Menu. Press your UP arrow key (bottom right corner of your keyboard) to select "Turn Off Computer." Hit the Enter key, then press the RIGHT arrow key (bottom right corner of your computer) and press Enter again. Your computer will go through the shutdown process safely.

I give more tips for performing other actions without a mouse in my book, Taming Your Computer -- Beyond the Basics.

Remember, from now through December 31, 2005, you will receive FREE SHIPPING on your order of any of my computer manuals. Click here to go to my website to place your order. You may order online or if you prefer, print out the order form and mail to me with your check, money order or credit card information. You may also call me at (303) 752-2152 to place your order.

Greetings!
Change the font in Word -- permanently!
Have it YOUR way

The default (standard) font in Microsoft Word documents in Times New Roman 12 pt. If that's not your favorite font or you find it too small to read comfortably, you can change it -- permanently. To do so, first start Microsoft Word. Before typing anything, LEFT click Format, LEFT click Font. In the Font dialog box, choose a new font and/or font size by LEFT clicking the dropdown arrow beside the font name and/or font size box. LEFT click your new choices. Look in the bottom left corner of the Font dialog box and LEFT click Default.

A "warning" box will open asking if you want to change the default font. Be fearless! LEFT click Yes. From this point forward, the font in all of your Microsoft Word documents will be changed to your new selection. Sorry, this option isn't available in Microsoft Works.

Remember, you only have until Dec. 31, 2005, to receive FREE SHIPPING when you order one or both of my books. Check airline arrivals on Google

$Account.OrganizationName
Greetings!
Check airline arrivals on Google
Don't waste time calling the airlines

With the holidays coming up, do you dread calling the airlines to check on flight arrival times? It's really not necessary. You can do it on Google. Click here to go to Google's website: www.Google.com. In the long white Search box type the airline and flight number, for example United 222. (Be sure to use a space between them.) Then LEFT click Google Search.

The first line of search results will say:
Track status of United Airlines flight 222
on Travelocity - Expedia - fboweb.com

LEFT click fboweb.com.

A map will appear on your screen showing the current location of the flight. To the right of the map you will see a status chart, indicating the flight's origination and destination cities, it's current status and other flight information. If you're really bored, you can continue to watch the map and see the location of the aircraft change every minute.

This tip is found on page 82 of my book, Taming Your Computer -- The Simple Basics. There are several other Google tips on that page.

The deadline for FREE SHIPPING on both of my books ends December 31, 2005. Click here to go to my website to place your order. Post Office online

$Account.OrganizationName
Greetings!
Post Office online
Don't stand in long lines at the Post Office this year

Do you dread standing in long lines at the Post Office to buy stamps, change your address or hold your mail while you're on vacation? So do I, so I use the Post Office website for many of these things. Click here to go to www.USPS.com, the website for the Postal Service.

If you click the Household tab, you will be able to order stamps and have them delivered to you, change your mailing address and have your mail held, as well as many other options.

Other tabs at the top of the page help you find a ZIP code, locate a post office, print a label and calculate postage.

Check it out. Click on several of the tabs so see what's available. Use the green Back button at the top of your screen to return to the previous window. You won't believe how much time you can save, and who actually enjoys standing in lines?

Here's a special savings on both of my books! From now through December 31, 2005, you will receive FREE SHIPPING on your order. Click here to go to my website to place your order. You may order online or if you prefer, print out the order form and mail to me with your check, money order or credit card information. Cleaning your Flat Screen Monitor

$Account.OrganizationName
Greetings!
Cleaning your flat screen monitor

Do you have one of those fancy new flat screen monitors -- the ones that take up very little space on your desk? Aren't they wonderful? They do take special care, however. Do not use glass cleaner on these screens. They are softer than glass, so they require special handling. Keep your fingers and sharp objects away from this type of screen because they are very easily damaged or scratched.

Remove surface dust or fingerprints with a soft, dry cloth. If this doesn't do the trick, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol may be sprayed onto a damp cleaning cloth. Vinegar may be used instead of alcohol. Paper towels are too abrasive and may scratch the screen. Strong cleaners such as ammonia should never be used because they can damage the screen.

This tip is found on page 49 of Taming Your Computer -- The Simple Basics. If you don't already have a copy click here to order your copy.

Print from the last page to the first page

$Account.OrganizationName
Greetings!
Print from the last page to the first
No more collating long documents

One problem with printing long documents is the way printers eject the pages. Page 1 lands in the paper tray face up, page 2 goes on top of it, etc. When the job is done you must go through the entire stack and resort them so they are in the proper order.

You do have the option to print your document from the last page forward, making resorting unnecessary. This might not seem like such a big deal, but what if you're printing 10 copies of a 10- page document? Let me show you how to save some time.

When you are ready to print, LEFT click File, then LEFT click Print. The Print dialog box will appear. Look for a button, usually in the bottom left corner, labeled Options. LEFT click the Options button. You will see a long list of options. Look for a checkbox beside Reverse Print Order. LEFT click this checkbox. Click OK and click OK again. You've done it. Your document will print from the last page to the first. Celebrate all the time you've saved!

How much space is left on my hard drive

$Account.OrganizationName
Greetings!
How much space is left on my hard drive?
Check it out for yourself

Do you wonder how much of your hard drive is full? You can find out very easily. LEFT click the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen. LEFT click My Computer on the right side of the new screen that opens. RIGHT click Local Disk (C:) . LEFT click Properties. You will see a diagram of a circle indicating the used and unused areas of your hard drive. Most computers purchased in the last two years have HUGE hard drives and you will probably never fill them up. When you are finished, LEFT click OK and then close the My Computer window. Easy?

Here's a special savings on both of my books! From now through December 31, 2005, you will receive FREE SHIPPING on your order. Click here to go to my website to place your order. Right click to spellcheck

$Account.OrganizationName
Greetings!
Right click to spellcheck
Another use for the right mouse button

Did you know that if you misspell a word in a document you can quickly correct it by right clicking the word? It's true! When you right click the word, a shortcut menu will appear, giving you alternate spellings. Simply LEFT click the word you want to use and it's fixed!

Here's another tip. If this is an uncommon word (such as the spelling of an unusual last name) you can ADD the word to the dictionary so it won't be underlined in red ever again! Again, RIGHT click the word and then LEFT click Add to Dictionary! Isn't that easy?

Here's a special savings on both of my books! From now through December 31, 2005, you will receive FREE SHIPPING on your order. Click here to go to my website to place your order. Open Programs in Maximized Screen
Save time!

A new client asked me last week how she could start Solitaire from the icon on her desktop (screen) and have it open in a full screen, rather than a small window. Well, that got me to thinking and investigating because I didn't know the answer. I did a quick Google search and here's what I found.

This will only work for opening a program from an icon on your desktop. First RIGHT click the icon. A shortcut menu will pop up. LEFT click Properties. A dialog box will open. LEFT click the Shortcut tab. About halfway down this box you will see a line that says "Run:" The box to the right will probably say "Normal window." LEFT click the dropdown arrow to the right of this text. LEFT click "Maximized." LEFT click OK. Now when you click that icon to open the program, the program will fill your entire screen.

Seeing your pictures in My Pictures

$Account.OrganizationName
Greetings!
Seeing your pictures in My Pictures

Do you have photographs stored in My Pictures on your computer? Do you see the actual pictures when you click on that folder or just little images that represent the pictures?

To see the pictures you've stored in My Pictures, left click the Start button in the bottom left corner of your screen. You should see My Pictures in the list at the top right corner of the menu. Left click My Pictures. If you don't see the actual photos, look at the toolbar at the top of the screen. It starts with an arrow inside a circle followed by the word "Back." At the far right end of that toolbar you'll see a small square button with a dropdown arrow on the right. Click the dropdown arrow and a list of options will appear. Left click Thumbnails and you will see individual photos or several folders that have photos on the folder. Each folder will have a name. If the photo you're looking for is inside a folder, double click the folder and the photos inside will appear. The rest of the photos in that folder will appear in a row at the bottom of the screen. To see a particular photo enlarged, double click that photo. That photo will appear on your screen. Look at the buttons below the photo. One of them is a Printer button. Click the printer button to print the photo. Windows will walk you through the steps to print that photo.

This Thumbnail option is available in other views in Windows, such as Windows Explorer.

Windows Updates are SO Important!

$Account.OrganizationName
Greetings!
Windows Updates are SO Important!
Keeping your computer safe

Microsoft frequently releases FREE updates to the Windows program (that's the program that runs your computer). It's extremely important that you receive these updates on a regular basis. Many of the updates are security related. In other words, hackers continue to find ways to invade your computer and Microsoft continues to plug those holes. You can't receive these updates unless you tell your computer to do so.

To see if your computer is set to receive the automatic updates, left click the Start button. Left click Control Panel. If you only see about 10 icons, left click "Switch to Classic View" in the left column. You should now see numerous icons. Left click the System icon toward the bottom of the screen.

You might see the "Automatic" circle selected. This is usually set for "Every day at 3 a.m." This is fine if you leave your computer on all night. I suggest that you click in the circle beside "Download updates for me but let me choose when to install them." With this option selected you will receive a message in a small "bubble" in the bottom right corner of your screen when updates have been downloaded and are ready to install. Click in the center of the bubble (not the X in the corner of the bubble) and a new window will appear. Click the Install button in this window and the downloads will be installed for you. You may receive a message when the download is completed that it's necessary to restart your computer. Click Restart Now and the computer will shut itself off and turn itself back on. If you have never downloaded the updates it may take a long time to bring your computer up to date, but it's an important investment of time.

Tips like this are found in Taming Your Computer -- The Simple Basics. If you don't already have a copy click here to order your copy.

About Me

My photo
I love teaching senior citizens to use computers. I'm a senior myself, so I'm working with my peers. When I work with you in your home on your computer, I don't sit in front of your computer and TELL you want to do. You sit in front of your computer while I TEACH you what to do. I also write step-by-step instructions for you to follow when I'm not there.
